I'll try the fluid check for head gasket leakage gases where the blue fluid changes color if there are gases escaping, but wanted to see what other things I can check for as to the source of oil into coolant, but not the reverse to where the oil is clean and uncontaminated. Thanks for any advice/suggestions where to look for diagnosing this. Just trying to save this car to avoid the owner needing to replace it. The engine sounds pretty good when running now that it's thawed out, but will cause oil to bubble into the coolant reservoir. The oil dipstick looks nice and clear/dark pure oil, no coolant.Ĭould it be related to the radiator, or any other part of the car that would have been damaged from freezing? The owner kept refilling the reservoir with tap water due to leaky water pump, so the car sat in like 20 degree weather with mostly water and perhaps that froze the radiator, water pump, or other things. If leakage has been present for a long period of time, the most typical visible sign to look for is brownish milky sludge in the coolant. We often hear from consumers who are experiencing this issue. What else could cause oil to go into the coolant reservoir? I'm trying to find if there could be any other cause besides a blown head gasket or cracked engine. Oil and coolant can mix in an accident involving a cracked cylinder head or engine block damage. That’s why you should investigate the issue further. However, anything above that can occurrence an ample coolant leak. That means two to three ounces of coolant loss a year is typical. The coolant escapes the seal and finds its way into the combustion chamber, leaving you with a mysteriously low coolant level in the reservoir. You can expect a coolant loss of 0.25 every 4-6 months, and your engine will run well without leaks. Dealing with a 2006 XC90, 2.5T 5-cylinder engine If your coolant level is low, with no obvious leak, and your car has a turbocharger, there might be a failure in the seal between the compressor and the engine.
